What is Xenical?

Xenical is a safe and clinically proven weight loss drug used to treat people who are overweight or with a body mass index (BMI) of more than 30kg. They are designed to be used alongside a low-calorie diet.

How Does Xenical Work?

Xenical 120mg works by blocking fat from your digestive system. It stops around one-third of fat from being absorbed by attaching to enzymes in your digestive system, which is then eliminated by your body.

Xenical Dosage Instructions

Take one 120 mg capsule three times a day, swallow with water. This should be taken before, during or an hour after breakfast, lunch and dinner.

If you forget to take your medicine, do not take a double dose. Instead, take it as soon as you remember, but only if this is within one hour of your last meal. After this, continue to take it at the usual times. Speak to your GP or pharmacist if you have missed several doses.

You should contact your doctor or pharmacist urgently if you take more capsules than you have been told to take.

How to Take Xenical for Best Results

To get the best results from xenical it's important to monitor what you eat. This weight loss pill only works when fat is present in your diet, and it shouldn’t be taken if you miss a main meal or if you have a meal containing no fat.

It’s important to follow a balanced, calorie-controlled diet with an average of 30 % of the calories from fat. Sources of carbohydrates, protein and fat should be distributed across your three meals for the day, and you should avoid snacking on fatty foods in between meals.

If you have not lost at least 5 % of your body weight after 12 weeks your treatment may be stopped.

Xenical Side Effects

Most symptoms are typically mild; however, you should inform your doctor or pharmacist if you feel unwell whilst using xenical.

  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Urgent or increased need to open the bowels
  • Flatulence with discharge

  • Low blood sugar levels (experienced by some people with type 2 diabetes)

Common side effects (more 1 to 10 users in 100 affected):

  • Rectal pain or discomfort
  • Soft stools
  • Incontinence (stools)
  • Feeling bloated
  • Tooth/gum disorder
  • Menstrual cycle irregularities
  • Fatigue

Xenical Weight Loss Warnings

There are certain circumstances when you should not take xenical. Do not take this medicine if:

  • You’re allergic to orlistat or to any of the other ingredients of xenical
  • You have chronic malabsorption syndrome
  • You have cholestasis
  • You are breastfeeding

You may need to adjust the dose of any medicines you are taking as you lose weight.  It is important to let your doctor or pharmacist know of any other medications you are taking before you start using xenical.

A diet high in fat can increase your likelihood of gastrointestinal effects and a change in bowel movements. This may cause you to have fatty or oily stools because of the elimination of undigested fat in your faeces. It is important to spread fat intake across your three main meals per day. Over consumption of both calories and fat whilst using xenical will also reduce its effect and potentially how much weight you lose. Effort must be made to stick to your nutrition programme throughout the course of your treatment.

Some people can experience severe diarrhoea which could impact the way oral contraception works therefore an additional contraceptive method is recommended whilst using xenical.

You should also inform your doctor whether you suffer from problems with your kidney. Orlistat, the main active ingredient in xenical, has been linked with renal stones in people suffering from chronic kidney disease.

Xenical and Pregnancy

Taking xenical whilst pregnant is not recommended. Weight loss during pregnancy is not typically advised because of the potential harm to both mother and the developing fetus. The nutritional needs of the mother increase during this time and xenical can interfere with the absorption of fat soluble vitamins. Restricting calories or using weight-loss medications could affect the development of the baby.

Xenical and Breastfeeding

You must not breast-feed during treatment with xenical because there is little evidence as to whether xenical passes into human milk.

Xenical Interactions

Let your doctor or pharmacist know if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including non-prescription drugs. Using multiple medicines at the same time can strengthen or weaken the effects of the medicines.

Xenical can impact the way the following medicines work:

  • Anticoagulant drugs (e.g. warfarin)
  • Ciclosporin
  • Iodine salts and/or levothyroxine
  • Amiodarone
  • Medicines to treat HIV
  • Medicines for anxiety, depression or psychiatric disorders or anxiousness

It may also decrease the absorption of antiepileptic drugs leading to convulsions. Tell your doctor if you notice that the frequency and/or severity of the convulsions have changed when taking xenical together with antiepileptic drugs.

The absorption of supplements with some fat-soluble nutrients, particularly beta-carotene and vitamin E can be reduced when using this medicine. It's important to maintain a well-balanced diet rich in fruit and vegetables. In some cases, your doctor or pharmacist may suggest you take a multivitamin supplement.

Xenical is not recommended for people taking acarbose, an anti-diabetic drug used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Xenical and Alcohol

Drinking alcohol during your weight loss programme can be counterproductive because alcohol is high in calories. This interferes with your weight loss goals and irritates the digestive system, worsening some of the side effects associated with xenical. Heavy drinking can also interrupt nutrient absorption and contribute to vitamin deficiencies.

Xenical Alternatives

Xenical vs Orlistat

Both medicines work in a similar way. The difference between orlistat and xenical is that xenical is a branded medication, while orlistat tablets are the generic version, meaning it is marketed under its chemical name rather than a brand name.

  • Both medicines contain the active ingredient orlistat and come in 120 mg dosage
  • If cost is a concern, orlistat is cheaper to buy because it is a non-branded medicine
  • They both have the same mechanism of action, blocking about one-third of fat from food you eat and similar side effect profiles

Xenical vs Ozempic

Xenical (Orlistat):

  • Works by blocking fat absorption in the intestines
  • Better option for people who prefer an oral medication and can tolerate its gastrointestinal side effects
  • Shown to help people lose 5–10% body weight
  • More affordable, especially in generic form

Ozempic (Semaglutide):

  • Works by reducing appetite, slowing digestion, and improving blood sugar control
  • Suitable for people who are comfortable with injections and looking for greater weight loss, or who also have type 2 diabetes
  • Shown to help people lose 15–20% body weight loss
  • Ozempic cannot be prescribed for weight loss currently in the UK. It is only approved for the treatment of diabetes to protect supply for diabetes patients
