Tips For Finding The Right Hair Transplant Clinic
One of the first steps of a hair transplant is finding the best clinic for your needs and concerns. You can achieve this by following these helpful tips:
- Do Your Research - Take your time to do research and compare clinics in your area. This may involve asking friends or family members for recommendations, looking at the clinic’s website and social media pages as well as reading customer reviews and case studies. Consider important factors such as expertise, techniques, guarantees, indemnity insurance and aftercare.
- Book Multiple Consultations - Most hair transplant clinics offer a free consultation to discuss your needs and concerns. Attending multiple consultations is a great way to visit the clinic and get a first impression. You may even get the opportunity to meet with a surgeon.
- Ask Questions - Before you attend a consultation, make a list of questions you want to ask. This will help you feel more informed and reassured about your decision in choosing the right clinic.
- Explore Your Finance Options - Hair transplant treatments can be costly so it’s essential to consider your budget and finance options. If you think you have found the right clinic for you, make sure to enquire about the finance options and compare them to other clinics. Luckily, most hair transplant clinics offer payment plans to help spread out the initial cost.
- Check for Accreditations - Ensure your chosen hair transplant clinic is accredited by industry-leading bodies such as CGC (Care Quality Commission) with GMC (General Medical Council) and ISHRS (International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery) registered surgeons. These accreditations give you confidence in the clinic's standards of care and professionalism.
How Much Does a Hair Transplant Cost in the UK?
The cost of a hair transplant in the UK can vary depending on the clinic, the surgeon’s expertise, the extent of hair loss, the type of procedure, the number of grafts used and the specific needs of the individual. On average, the cost of a hair transplant in the UK ranges from £1,000 to £30,000. [3]
It is recommended to consult with different hair transplant clinics in your area to get an accurate quote based on your specific needs.
How Long Does a Hair Transplant Take?
On average, a hair transplant procedure can take between four and eight hours. However, individuals may require 2 or more sessions on different days if a large area of hair loss is being treated. [4]
Procedure
Similar to the cost, the length of a hair transplant can depend on several factors such as the size of the transplant, the type of procedure, the number of grafts needed and the skill level of the surgeon. For example, FUE hair transplants generally take longer than FUT hair transplants. An FUE procedure involves the extraction of individual hair follicles, whereas a FUT procedure requires the removal of a strip of skin from the donor area, which is then dissected into individual grafts for transportation. Therefore, FUE procedures are more complex and time-consuming than FUT procedures.
Recovery
In terms of how long it takes to recover from a hair transplant, individuals can expect to take 1 to 2 weeks off work after the procedure to see the full results. [3] During the recovery process, it’s crucial to follow your doctor’s or surgeon’s aftercare instructions. You may be prescribed hair loss medication or products to aid recovery.
Do I Need To Take Finasteride After a Hair Transplant?
Finasteride is a medication used to treat hair loss in men (male pattern baldness). It works by decreasing the production of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which contributes to shrinking hair follicles. By stopping DHT production, Finasteride slows down hair loss and stimulates hair growth. It is a prescription-only medication and only comes in tablets. [5]
Your hair transplant surgeon or specialist may recommend you take a Finasteride 1mg tablet daily after your hair transplant to support hair growth and prevent further hair loss.
