What is zineryt?

Zineryt is a lotion that contains an antibiotic called erythromycin, and zinc. The two products work together in helping to prevent and reduce acne acne vulgaris. It is usually prescribed for moderate to severe acne.

How does Zineryt work?

The bacteria associated with acne feeds on the oily substance produced by glands on our skin. This produces waste products that irritate the glands on the skin, causing spots and inflammation. Zineryt contains an antibiotic called erythromycin, which reduces the growth of the bacteria. Zineryt also contains zinc, which reduces inflammation caused by acne, and also reduces the production of oil by the skin.

What is zineryt used for?

Zineryt solution is a topical acne treatment used to reduce the growth of bacteria which cause spots, pimples, blackheads and whiteheads.

Zineryt side effects

Contact a doctor immediately if you notice a red, scaly rash with bumps under the skin and blisters. This could be due to a serious skin reaction, known as exanthematous pustulosis.

An allergic reaction requires immediate medical attention. You should contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following:

  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Swelling of the mouth, face and lips or tongue
  • Difficulty breathing

Stop using Zineryt and tell your doctor if:

  • You get a very painful rash or burning feeling after using Zineryt
  • It does not go away in a few hours
  • It gets worse each time you use it

Zineryt warnings

You should not use Zineryt if:

  • You are receiving treatment with antibiotics that belong to the same class as erythromycin, such as clindamycin and lincomycin. This can cause cross-resistance
  • You are allergic to erythromycin or zinc or any of the other ingredients in this medicine
  • You are allergic to antibiotics of the macrolide group

Zineryt and pregnancy

Zineryt is safe to use in those that are pregnant, but you should ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

Zineryt alternatives

Zineryt vs Differin

  • Both medicines are topical treatments for acne
  • Zineryt active ingredients are antibiotic erythromycin and zinc acetate, while Adapalene is the active ingredient in Differin
  • Differin Gel is anti-inflammatory and works by regulating cell turnover, applied once daily while Zineryt has an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and healing effect and is applied twice daily
  • They can be used together to effectively treat acne, but you must speak to your doctor or pharmacist before combining treatments to ensure it’s appropriate for your skin type and condition

Zineryt or Duac

  • Zineryt works to kill bacteria and reduce inflammation
  • Duac combines antibacterial effects with pore-unclogging properties
  • Duac has benzoyl peroxide, which can be more effective in preventing new acne lesions due to its keratolytic action, however it can cause bleaching to hair and clothing
  • Both are effective, but can vary depending on the individual’s skin condition and response to treatment

Zineryt ingredients

Active ingredients: erythromycin and zinc acetate

Inactive ingredients: di-isopropyl sebacate and ethanol

After using Zineryt an initial worsening of acne, referred to as "purging," may occur. Increased breakouts can sometimes happen when the treatment accelerates the turnover of skin cells, bringing underlying blockages and impurities to the surface faster than they would naturally appear. This is not as common with Zineryt as with some other acne treatments like retinoids but is possible.

If you wish to apply make-up, apply Zineryt beforehand and wait for it to dry first.

If you forget an application of Zineryt, continue your next dose as usual. You should not apply more than the prescribed amount to compensate, as this may irritate your skin. Forgetting the odd application will not have any long-term effects on your treatment.

It usually takes around 8-12 weeks for optimum results. If you have not seen any results after 8 weeks, you should contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice. If the treatment has been successful after 12 weeks, you should stop using Zineryt. You can continue to use it again if the acne returns later.

One bottle of Zineryt has a shelf life of 8 weeks. Our pharmacists will make up the preparation in our pharmacy, using a sterile technique.

Zineryt is effective in treating acne that is associated with a presence of bacteria. There can be many causes for acne. Your clinician will be able to tell you if Zineryt is the correct medication for you, by examining your skin.
